One beautiful sunny day, while driving my Brink's armored car in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida, we approached the K-Mart parking lot.   We were meeting the Miami Brink's truck to exchange money bags assigned to areas in our respective jurisdictions.   The Miami truck was already waiting at the front door, so we pulled up in front of it--head to head.

The Society of Friends is considered a church of peace.   They are called "Quakers" or "Friends"  within the church, and there are about 350,000 worldwide.    As the last in my family to have attended a Quaker "Meeting House", I'm here to tell you that their church is quite different.

I've always loved hats of various types, and they always show my affiliations.   Even before I started going bald at age sixteen, baseball caps were my early favorites.   These were NY Yankee and Boy Scout caps mostly up through my teenage years.

Growing up in Florida, I spent numerous hours enjoying the Atlantic Ocean and became well versed in the power of water.   Many of my buddies were lifeguards or members of our state championship swimming team, where safety was of the utmost importance.   Even though we all knew about the strong undertow and rip tides, I was swept out to sea three times.   No big hairy deal, you just stayed on top of the water, then swam perpendicular to the undertow.   Since I was also a body surfer, I just rode the top of the waves into shore. However, the third time, I was swept so far out, that I couldn't even see the houses along the shoreline.   There may have been a prayer or two while body surfing and swimming towards the beach.

I met good-looking and crew-cut "Ole" Olson in college, and we became good friends.   We agreed to spend the summer working for his father who owned seventeen mica mines near Burnsville, North Carolina (near Ashville and Black Mountain).   We both thought that it would be a great adventure.
