Going Down With The Ship PDF Print E-mail
Written by Dean Flewwellin

This adventure began with thoughts of going to sea as a crew member on a tanker.   The tanker was named the Dynafuel and was a ship of the fleet for the Sun Oil Company.   The Dynafuel regularly docked and pumped off gasoline products at the Sun Oil dock in Jacksonville, Florida.   Since my Dad was the superintendent there, he asked the captain if I could come aboard.   So at eight years of age, I was allowed to wander around this ship (for several years), and ate and drank a lot of free food and pop.

Fireworks Frenzy PDF Print E-mail
Written by Dean Flewwellin

Loud and beautiful fireworks are a great form of entertainment.   However, fireworks among lovers can also be loud and beautiful.   Even though I've experienced both, thankfully, I will try to leave lovers out of this article.

As a young boy in New York, I was awed by the fireworks over the Hudson River and on New Years Eve after the big ball was dropped in Times Square.   Navy Day was my favorite, with several ships anchored on the river, and a large formation of planes flying over NYC.   The crowd had to look straight up to see them, as the skyscrapers on each side of the street blocked most of the view.   However, the most impressive sight to me was the 21-gun salute given to President Harry S. Truman by each ship, as he passed them on his destroyer.   Talk about loud fireworks!

If You Can Touch It, You Can Catch It! PDF Print E-mail

"If you can touch it--you can catch it." was a favorite phrase that my Dad imparted on me at an early age, while we were playing catch or tossing a football.   This proved to be one of the most important things that he taught me during my lifetime.   Even at the tender age of seven, and dropping the ball so often, I knew that he meant for me to never give up.   This has served me well throughout many sports, many jobs, and even two marriages.

Dear Devil, God Made Me Do It PDF Print E-mail

Dear Devil:   When you made me leave home and ride my tricycle in and out of those downtown stores, God sent my parents on a search to seek and destroy my little bottom mission.   PS-- God parked my trike for a loooong time, which was okay with me, as my butt wasn't up to it anyway.
