It was the most watched hockey game in history, with millions watching from all over the world.   It was a great hockey game, played by two great teams - Canada and the USA.   It even went into overtime, which made it more spectacular.   Either team could have won it, but our northern neighbors squeaked it out 3-2.
As a youngster, I played a little hockey in New York, and I enjoyed it.   So I spent a lot of time watching it on TV over my lifetime.
As a member of the Lions Club in South Dakota, our region was associated with the Canadians from Regina and Saskatoon, Saskatchewan.   During joint meetings and conventions, we would all sing each others national anthems.  Thus, O' Canada became my second favorite anthem.
During my younger years, I met a Canadian family on the boardwalk of my home town of Jacksonville Beach, Florida, and our families became friends.   Their son was one of Canada's highly touted and highly respected Mounties.   My photo of him in his bright red uniform, plus his great personality and intelligence, certainly put us all in awe of him.   He volunteered into the Royal Canadian Air Force, and suddenly, there were no more letters from him.  All of my inquiries met a "dead end!"
So the USA hockey team scored a goal to tie the game with twenty-four seconds left in the game.   Thus, a sudden-death overtime went into effect.   A Canadian player with the puck began to fall, but suddenly he flung his stick at the puck, and pushed it towards the goal.   Somehow, the great USA goalie missed it, and Canada roared in approval.
It was a great win for Canada, but a tough loss for the USA.   But having known so many nice Canadians, and working with them, the loss didn't seem to hurt as much.
I've seen Old Glory and the Maple Leaf flying beside each other numerous times in my life, and it was great seeing them flying side-by-side again on the winners podium.
I even recall another time when we shared our flags.   It was on the beaches of Normandy on June 6th, 1944.   We shared blood that day too.
As I watched the closing ceremonies, with the Canadian Mounties at attention while raising their flag, the whole stadium was singing O' Canada.   You could see and feel their pride!
So my Mountie friend.....wherever you are.....this win is for you!
