Dear Friends and Family,

As many of you know, 11 years ago I lost one of my best friends to breast cancer.  Bryanna Latoof was one of the most wonderful people I’ve ever known, and her death was a heartbreaking loss to me, her friends and her family.

After many years of thinking that I ought to do something to honor her memory, I decided this spring to actually do it.  So, in October, I am going to participate in the Avon Walk for Breast Cancer in Charlotte, N.C., walking 39 miles over two days.  I’ve already started training.

(I also want to honor those in my life who are breast cancer survivors. This includes my mother-in-law as well as aunts, cousins and friends.)

I’m asking you to support me in this effort – my goal is to raise at least $1,800.  I know it’s a hard time to ask people for money.  But one of the things I like about the Avon Foundation’s efforts is that in addition to funding medical research, it also is committed to improving access to treatment and support services for women (and men) with breast cancer.  This includes 100 public hospitals that provide care for the uninsured and underinsured as well as more than 1,000 grants to community-based programs.

This means that your dollars will help the people who need it most.

To donate to this cause and support my efforts, please click on the link at the bottom of this message to make a donation online.  (You can also read more about Bryanna there.)

If you are my Facebook friend, you also can donate there, or you can mail a check made out to “Avon Walk for Breast Cancer” directly to me at 1405 N. Mangum St., Durham, N.C., 27701.

Your gift will be appreciated more than I can possibly tell you.

This is what I call a great "Hick-Up!" Durham is a great city enhanced by Duke University. I wonder if they still have the Durham Bulls baseball team, & still make Bull Durham tobacco there? With my aunt & uncle living there, I almost went to Duke. I should have! Had a scholarship for the sophomore year, but couldn't afford the first year. :( And Sally, tis a great way to honor Bryanna! :)
