Halloween is just around the corner.  Since I am getting older, I decided to shop in the teen department for a costume (for the first time), much to my parents' distress.

My dad's idea of an appropriate Halloween costume is way off.   He wants me to me a nun.   I don't.

I showed him some of my favorite costumes.   He was less than pleased with my choices.   He quickly scrolled through some other selections trying to bring me away from the teen costume selection.   And there it was--the nun costume.

"Liv, Liv, look at this!   I dare you to be a nun!   You're catholic, right?   Be the nun, be the nun."   I could have run.  A nun?   Right.   That's really gonna be a good childhood memory.

Me, trick or treating with my friends, at age 13, in a sweaty nun costume.   It would, without a doubt, be my dad's best memory, and my worst.   He would successfully scare away all of the boys with that costume!   It was also the only costume he would pay $50.00 bucks for--no, $100.00.   It was basically his dream for me to be a nun, covered head to toe for the rest of my life, hidden under a thick shapeless dress.

Anyway, for Halloween, I wound up buying a Miss Muffet costume.  The thing is, I have to wear a slip under it to make it longer.  On the bright side, I only have five more years until I move out and wear whatever I choose.

I'm sure in twenty years I will look back and be thankful that my parents looked out for me, or maybe not.

frankly, i believe a nun's habit would have made you more memorable. i also know a good convent you may attend when you realize how protected you can be there. a nun's costume will give you some protection from icky boys, too, i expect. i applaud, however, the loving family who care so much about you, and the impression you need to make. sometimes we need protection that adults can give when we are so young and cute. and you are CUTE!!!!!!!!!!!

I loved it too - Liv! If U R as smart as I believe you are, you will thank your parents way before you turn 33. They are thinking ahead FOR YOU, & you are heavily into the MOMENT. Most of us can trust our parents for a lifetime, & yours show the same signs. Besides, I saw the devil costume last year, & it would have shocked Dad. I was in college at 16, & skipping a grade was my worst lifetime mistake. You will love the next 5 years! But Liv...as a Muffet, you can Tough-it out!

Terrific story! I remember, way back when, Momma always wanted me to wear costumes she made. She was a great seamstress, so I didn't mind tat aspect, but who wants to be a fuzzy bunny? or a teddy bear? How about the all time favorite, a devil, complete with tail and horns? I gess she was trying to tell me something.....
