Kneed A Catfish? PDF Print E-mail

My husband and I had a home on Bayou Barataria before Katrina and Rita did a number on it.   The house had to be demolished, along with a camp and other out-buildings.   It was a very sad time.   We only used it occasionally because it was meant to be used that way.   My husband and I both had jobs in another area where we lived.

I remember so many fun and exciting things that happened, and some not so fun, while we owned that property.   I learned to catch fish, crabs, and even an occasional eel.   And this is where this story really begins, not with the eel, but with a fairly large catfish.

I had a pole, cork and all, that ker-plunked in the water when I would cast it.   As I was fishing one day, after casting my line, the cork was immediately pulled under the water.   I jerked my line and up flew a catfish on the business end of the line, and wham, the fish's fin went right into my knee-cap.   It had the audacity to glare at me, and I panicked.

It was stuck fast and at an angle where I could not remove it.   I screamed for help while it kept trying to swim away.   But it couldn't get away; it was stuck in my knee.   The gutsy lady who lived on the property came running to my assistance.

Needless to say, we were both stunned at the dilemma of the swimming catfish in my knee--except it wasn't swimming any more.   Betsy, the lady who came to my aid, really was tough.   After stating the obvious,  "You have a catfish lodged in your knee,"  she calmly informed me of my choices:
"One of two things must happen, here.   I can cut it out, and you're smart enough to know the pain you will experience will be great, or, I can take you to the ER."

I envisioned the humiliation of hospital staff and patients viewing a catfish hanging out of my knee in the emergency room.   I glared at the fish attached to me.   I was sweaty and dirty, and my conservative self told me what needed to be done.
"Get out the knife, Betsy."

She did.

KER-PLUNKED

I wonder if I was the only one who had a happy Knee-Jerk reaction to the wonderful word of "ker-plunked?" I'm remended of this magical word from the "Greatest Generation."
YOUR FISH - MY SNAKE

Wow, I would only tell that story on a Kneed to Know basis! My Mom forbid me to play in Florida palmetto bushes, but my buddy & I found a nice clearing inside them one day. I heard the rattle, was bitten on the leg, & it slithered away. Being Cub Scouts, we knew to slice an X, suck it, spit it, & doctor it. It swelled, went down, & eventually OK. Didn't tell my Mom til she was 80. Mom was strict! Didn't want my butt to hurt worse than my leg. She still chewed me out! Go figure!?
