The latest irony manifesting in my life is that my threshold for bullshit has gotten lower, just at the time when people have begun to shovel more and more of it in my direction.  Young people in general, and salesmen in particular, assume that anyone with graying hair is confused enough to accept their pitch without analysis.  They don’t realize that experienced adults are two steps ahead of them and know exactly where their pitch is leading….so we have no patience in waiting for it.

I need to raise my threshold again, because it's unhealthy for me to talk back to the TV every time I hear a commercial that only tells half the truth.  The same thing applies to all those hysterical emails predicting the end of the world, quoting biblical passages that never existed.

It's the teacher in me, who insists that arguments make internal sense and is appalled at the uncritical individuals who accept whatever they hear and pass it on to their friends, rather than exert the minimal effort to check the facts for themselves.  I need to let it go - every bit of it - and convince myself that the worldwide pandemic of this practice is not a malevolent entity's personal attack on my sanity.

In college I performed the High King Conchubar in a readers' theatre production of Yeats' On Baile's Strand.  The greatest image has remained in my mind all these years - where he speaks of "a throne too high for insult."  That is where I have to place myself - so high above the bullshit piling-up on the white cliffs below, that I am not even bothered by the smell.

That's my assignment.  The question is - can I do it?
