The Forsaken

The extreme winds abated,

and destruction reigned supreme.

I have heard of such upheavals,

but mainly through stories and dreams.

I know too, of those who suffer,

who pass their lives in gutters,

who live in alleys where vermin live,

swarming havens of despair;

among the scattered garbage

from buildings, soot colored,

decaying and faded from wear.

I have known these things

and those who stare

with eyes that are lifeless;

sad eyes, exhausted and spent;

eyes that no longer see as we see,

that burn from the toxic air.

Here they huddle, some bent and laim,

some with guilt, many with shame,

others devoid of feeling or blame;

often shivering like frightened rabbits,

in the dampness and odor of decaying flesh.

It is here that they live, day after day;

here that they cry, and sometimes  pray.

Then, when the sky darkens

and the cold air arrives,

and the winds begin their assaults,

where do they hide, these forsaken ones;

where can they go to find warmth;

and where is the love from those who care?

I do not see it, nor is it there

Many will die and many will watch,

and most will not accept any blame,

much to the detriment of those in need,

and to man, his very great shame.
