Starting with Love.

During the chilling weather of Winter, I like to warm my soul with thoughts of Spring. Of course, thoughts of Spring turns my attention to gardening. Being from the Mid- Atlantic states, Spring is still some time away. This doesn't mean I can't get a jump start on my garden.

I find Valentine's Day perfect for starting my vegetable seeds. You might say they are started with love! The six weeks until April Fool's Day is just about enough time for the seeds to make it to healthy, young sprouts.

The highest form of recycling is giving new purpose to old goods. Here are a couple of thoughts for you to consider.

The first is cup cake tins. If you don't have a couple laying around the house, try a thrift store or flea market. You can usually pick them up for less then a dollar. Let's face it, no one really bakes anymore.

Cupcake tins generally have a dozen openings. I place paper cup cake sleeves in the tin and fill with starting soil. These work great. Toss in your seeds and add water. The paper sleeve are usually wax coated, so go easy on the water. If you find you need more drainage, simply poke a hole in the bottom. Come Spring and transplanting time, the paper sleeves peel easily from the plants.

Another recycled item from around the house is an old aquarium. If you don't have one, again, try the thrift stores and flea markets. I sometimes check with freinds and family for this kind of stuff. Many are happy to do away with the clutter.

Aquariums come in a variety of sizes. Bigger one can be found with their own stands for conveince. You are sure to find one to meet your needs as an indoor green house. They are perfect for starting your seeds. The glass box is water tight and grow lights fit into the hoods (or tops). The glass keeps the seedlings warm and toasty until Spring planting. I even leave the gravel in the bottom of the tank for extra drainage. Spritzing the plants with a spray bottle isn't an issue because the water is safely contained. Besides, I like to watch them grow.

Now with these ideas and a few warm thoughts of Spring, get your garden started!!

Hey Steven....I grow watermelons on the levee on Grand Isle, Louisiana, & your aquarium idea sounds feasible as a starter, & we can watch them on our camp "Poopdeck." It will also save me the time & effort of climbing our 23 steps, & walking 40' to the levee, & up the 60 degree embankment. I average about 17 watermelons annually, plus another 17 on the ground below the stairways. :)
